..half timbered and stone buildings which are a painters delight. You can take a boat trip down the river in a restored "Gabarres", a flat bottomed boat traditionally used to float barrels of wine down river to Bordeaux. Just an hour away the charming town of Brantome is well worth a visit. This pretty town with its narrow winding streets is an island encircled by a loop in the river Dronne linked to the outside world by five bridges, which gives it the nickname "The Venice of Perigord".
The town and its impressive riverside Abbey shelter under crescent shaped cliffs pierced with caves which belonged to the Abbey or were used as troglodyte homes. You can explore the river Dronne by canoe or in a "rosalie" a pedal powered boat. Also within the Charente region, can be found the city of Cognac which is one of Frances most popular tourist destinations. Although Brandy is produced all over the world, only those produced here can be called Cognac. Famous distilleries such as "Remy Martin", "Martell" "Courvoisier" & "Hennessy" are located here and most of them offer guided tours.
